A Therapeutic Approach to Learning
Mental health and emotional wellbeing at the core of everything we do.
At Edgewood Academy, we recognise that children cannot truly learn unless they feel emotionally safe, supported, and understood. Our classrooms are designed as welcoming, calming, and inclusive spaces that meet the emotional and mental health needs of every student. These therapeutic classrooms feature calm lighting, soft furnishings, regulation tools, flexible seating, and quiet areas—allowing students to work where they feel most comfortable and ready to engage.
Adverse Childhood Experiences
We understand that many children face adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma, and increasing pressures from social media and modern life, all of which impact brain development, behaviour, and readiness to learn. For children living with trauma, their primary focus is survival, which can manifest in behaviours such as withdrawal, anger, or running away. These behaviours are signals that they are not yet ready to absorb new information or be academically challenged.
At Edgewood Academy, we place emotional wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. We adopt a therapeutic teaching approach that goes beyond traditional academic instruction. Our teachers are not only educators but also compassionate guides who help students develop emotional intelligence, self-awareness, resilience, and interpersonal skills. We equip our staff with specialist training in trauma-informed practice, neuroscience, attachment theory, and emotional regulation strategies—empowering them to support vulnerable learners effectively.

Our Therapeutic Approach
Five interconnected pillars that shape our therapeutic environment.
Calm, Safe Environments
Creating calm, safe classroom environments that reduce stress and support concentration.
Emotional Regulation
Integrating emotional regulation tools and flexible learning spaces that respect individual needs.
Trusting Relationships
Building strong, trusting relationships between students and staff to foster a sense of belonging.
Social & Emotional Skills
Teaching social and emotional skills explicitly, helping students understand and manage their feelings.
Family Partnerships
Partnering closely with families and external professionals to provide consistent, holistic support.
Investing in Our People
This approach leads to calmer, more engaged classrooms where students with diverse needs—including those with ADHD and Autism—can access learning more consistently. We see improvements in communication, social skills, attendance, and academic outcomes. Students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn, which in turn boosts their confidence and achievement.
We recognise that the role of a teacher has evolved. To meet the complex needs of our students, we provide ongoing professional development to ensure our staff are equipped with the knowledge and strategies needed to teach therapeutically. By prioritising emotional wellbeing, we help students build self-belief, empathy, and resilience—foundations that enable them to thrive academically and personally.
At Edgewood Academy, we are committed to making therapeutic education a reality. We invite families, staff, and the wider community to join us in this journey of nurturing confident, emotionally intelligent learners prepared for life beyond the classroom.
