Keeping our pupils safe in the digital world

At Edgewood Academy, technology plays an important role in supporting learning, creativity and communication. All pupils will have access to iPads as part of our digital learning approach. We recognise that with the benefits of technology comes a responsibility to ensure that all pupils are safe when using it. Online safety is therefore a key part of our safeguarding culture.

Infrastructure

A Safe Digital Environment

All iPads used within the academy are carefully managed and monitored through secure school systems. This ensures that pupils can safely access the tools they need for learning while being protected from inappropriate content.

We use robust filtering and monitoring systems across our network which:

  • Prevent access to inappropriate websites and online content
  • Monitor online activity to help safeguard pupils
  • Alert staff to any potential concerns
  • Ensure devices are used safely and appropriately during the school day

This layered approach means that the internet access provided within school is secure, age-appropriate and designed to support learning.

Classroom Tools

Classroom Management with Apple Classroom

Teachers use Apple Classroom, a management tool that allows staff to guide and monitor learning on iPads in real time. This enables teachers to:

  • View student screens during lessons
  • Guide pupils to specific apps or learning activities
  • Lock devices or redirect attention when needed
  • Support pupils who may need help navigating technology

This ensures that technology enhances learning while maintaining a safe and focused classroom environment.

Education

Teaching Online Safety

Online safety is not only about systems and software – it is also about education. At Edgewood Academy, pupils will be explicitly taught how to stay safe online as part of our curriculum.

Through our curriculum, pupils will learn about:

  • Responsible and respectful online behaviour
  • Protecting personal information
  • Understanding digital footprints
  • Recognising online risks and how to report concerns
  • Developing positive and healthy relationships online

Online safety education is embedded within our PSHE and computing curriculum, ensuring pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely and confidently.

Safeguarding

A Whole-School Approach

Online safety at Edgewood Academy is part of our wider safeguarding commitment. Staff receive regular training, and pupils are encouraged to speak to trusted adults if they ever feel worried or unsure about something they encounter online. By combining secure technology, strong monitoring systems, effective teaching and a culture of safeguarding, we ensure that pupils can use digital tools safely while benefiting from the powerful learning opportunities they provide.
